Understanding the nuts and bolts behind ‘chemical anchoring’:

Chemical anchoring consists in anchoring rebars, threaded rods or any fixing device into a substrate, usually concrete or masonry structures, using a resin-based adhesive system delivery through injection in the bore hole, instead of the traditional mechanical anchoring technique. Since the system is based on chemical adhesion, no expansion and no additional load stress is imparted to the substrate contrary to mechanical type anchors. This chemical anchoring technique is therefore ideal for a wide range of applications, including close spacing (group anchoring) or close to edges fixing, installation in concrete of unknown quality or low compressive strength. In any cases, chemical anchoring is ideally suited for high load applications, with a resulting bond stronger than the substrate itself.

What are the advantages of Chemical Anchoring:

From the design phase to the product application, chemical anchoring offers some unique advantages, such as:

  • The borehole becomes sealed: Prevent the ingress of corrosion
  • The material does not expand: No risk of cracking the substrat
  • Keying: Holds also in porous subsrates
  • Outstanding load bearing capacity
  • Allow for fexibility in the design: Type/diametre of the anchor and the drill hole depth, close spacing/close distance to edges

Drawbacks

  • Limited working time
  • Waiting time (curing) before applying loads
  • Temperature dependant
  • Sensitive to drill hole conditions (dust, humidity)
  • Require precautions (reactive chemical) when preparing and injecting the product

Selecting the right anchoring adhesives:

Selecting the right anchoring adhesive requires:

  1. A specific understanding of the type of loads that the anchor will have to resist (tensile loads, shear loads, or a combination of tension and shear, sustained (long-term) loads, short-term loads like wind or vibrations, for example).
  2. Matching the adhesive material to the application (structural/non-structural), the project requirements (turnaround time, substrate material type: horizontal, vertical or overhead), the holes characteristics (depth, spacing, distance between holes and distances to edges), the temperatures (high/low), the presence of water (dry/wet/flooded), the need for chemical resistance, etc.
