FAQ
20 kg (44 lb) covers approximately 1.20 m² (13 ft²) at 10 mm (3/8 in) thick.
SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar should not be used as a bedding mortar for conventional masonry work. For applications requiring conventional Type N Mortar, please refer to SAKRETE Mortar Mix, Type N.
Allow the mortar to cure for 24 hours.
Before applying SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar, moisten the receiving surface or the base coat.
NOTE: If applying to drywall surfaces, do not moisten surface. Apply the mortar directly onto the surface with a trowel, ensuring that voids are filled. Force the stone against the wall using light pressure for several seconds. Once released, the stone should remain bonded to the surface. Nails may be used under the stone for support. Allow the mortar to cure for 24 hours.
Procedures for exterior applications to: concrete, masonry, surfaces, concrete panels, exterior-rated cement board or plywood*.
Step 1) Concrete, masonry surfaces, concrete panels, exterior-rated cement board or plywood
Step 2) Tar paper (*required on plywood)
Step 3) Metal lath
Step 4) Base coat
Step 5) SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar
Step 6) Install the masonry unit
Procedures for interior applications to: drywall, plywood, concrete panels, interior-rated cement board, etc.
Step 1) Drywall, plywood, concrete panels, interior-rated cement board, etc.
Step 2) Metal lath
Step 3) Base coat
Step 4) SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar
Step 5) Install the masonry unit
- Step #1: Installing the concrete panel: Ensure that the concrete panel is solidly anchored to the structure and installed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Ensure that the concrete panel is installed with the rougher side facing out. Where required, refer to the architectural specifications or consult a structural engineer, to ensure panels are correctly installed.
- Step #2: Installing the metal lath: The installation of the metal lath is an important step. Securely fasten the metal lath with screws and plastic or metal washers.
- Step #3: Installing the base coat: Apply a base layer of SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar over the metal lath, leaving the surface slightly roughened. Allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours.
- Step #4: Applying SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar: All surfaces to be in contact with SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar must be free from dust, oil, grease, or any other foreign substances that may interfere with the bond of the material.
- Step #5: Installing the mortar joints (if required). Carefully remove any nails installed to support the stone (see Application section). Ensure that the stone is well bonded to the surface. Fill in the joints using SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar. Use appropriate jointing tool to obtain the desired finish. If necessary, clean the surface using a nylon brush and clean water.
Add the required amount of water (while not exceeding the maximum) into the mixer along with 20 kg (44 lb) of SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar and mix for three (3) to five (5) minutes. If the maximum amount of water has not been exceeded add only enough of remaining water to bring mix to the desired consistency. Clean the mixer immediately after use.
SAKRETE Stone Veneer Mortar should be mixed with a maximum of 3.0 L (0.8 US gallon) of potable water per 20 kg (44 lb) bag, in a clean paddle mixer.
The substrate and mortar temperature should be between +5 °C (40 °F) and +38 °C (100 °F) and maintained in this range for 72 hours after mortar application.
