Closed-cell polyethylene backer rod (1.6 cm [5/8 in])

SikaSeal®-414 Backer Rod CA is a flexible, closed-cell, low-density polyethylene foam rod designed for use as a backing material in sealant joints. Its smooth, skin-like exterior provides excellent resistance to moisture while allowing easy compression and installation. SikaSeal®-414 Backer Rod CA ensures proper joint geometry, controls sealant depth, and prevents three-sided adhesion to optimize sealant performance and durability.

Usage

SikaSeal®-414 Backer Rod CA is used as a backing material for a wide range of interior and exterior joint sealing applications, including:
  • Expansion joints in building envelopes and structural assemblies
  • Pavement and sidewalk joints
  • Precast concrete units and copings
  • Curtain wall and façade joints
  • Horizontal and vertical glazing installations
  • Log construction, installed behind chinking mortar
  • Windows and doors perimeters

Application steps

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

The joint or opening must be clean, dry, and free of all obstructions before installing SikaSeal®-414 Backer Rod CA.

 

APPLICATION

  1. Cut SikaSeal®-414 Backer Rod CA to length as required, or dispense directly from the spool.
  2. Using a blunt instrument or roller, uniformly place the SikaSeal®-414 Backer Rod CA to the depth specified by the sealant manufacturer, architect, or project designer.
  3. After installation, the joint depth is typically set to one-half the joint width, unless project conditions require a different ratio (very small or large joints may vary).
