Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector provides clear weatherproof protection against deterioration caused by de-icing salt, gasoline, oil, weathering and efflorescence (white, powdery, salt-like deposits visible on masonry). Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector unique SALTLOK® Technology penetrates into the surface providing superior resistance to unsightly efflorescence staining often visible on brick, block and poured concrete surfaces. Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector seals bare masonry surfaces against dusting, staining, surface cracking and pock marking.

Usage

SEALER: Ideal for interior, exterior, horizontal or vertical masonry surfaces, including concrete driveways, garage floors, basement floors, concrete sidewalks, block retaining walls, brick siding/walkways, terrazzo, and slate surfaces. Worn surfaces with similar clear coatings, which allow water penetration, may be recoated with Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector. For best results test for proper adhesion on a small area prior to coating entire surface   PRIMER-SEALER: Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector can be used as a primer/sealer prior to applying DRYLOK Latex Concrete Floor Paint, DRYLOK E1 Latex 1-Part Epoxy Floor Paint, latex, alkyd or polyurethane concrete floor paints or carpeting. Do not use as a primer/sealer in a garage setting when subject to vehicle traffic. For self adhesive floor tiles, check with tile manufacturer for adhesion compatibility MINIMIZE RECURRING EFFLORESCENCE: Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector can be used as a primer/sealer under DRYLOK® Masonry Waterproofer or other masonry wall coatings to minimize recurring efflorescence. Application steps

SUBSTRATE PREPARATION

Remove all dirt, wax, dust, mildew, and loose or scaling material with a scraper, wire brush, or stiff bristle brush. Masonry surface must be dry and free of dirt, wax, dust, mildew, and loose or scaling material. For proper penetration and adhesion to extremely smooth bare concrete floors, use muriatic acid. Rinse thoroughly (pressure wash for best results). Allow to dry thoroughly according to manufacturer’s directions. If using a pressure washer, do not use on a pressure setting above 12.06 MPa (1750 PSI) to avoid damaging the concrete. Remember, concrete acts like a stone sponge. Pressure washing and general cleaning may trap residual moisture in the concrete. To check for trapped moisture, tape a 12 po x 12 po (12 in x 12 in) piece of 3 mil plastic or aluminum foil tightly on all four edges to the surface. Remove it after 24 hours. If the floor side of the plastic or foil is damp, allow additional drying and repeat the test.

   

EFFLORESCENCE, a white, powdery, crystal-like deposit visible on the masonry surface, must be removed. Muriatic acid used according to manufacturer’s directions, is an effective efflorescence removal agent. All masonry surfaces are subject to occurrences of efflorescence. Properly prepared concrete should look and feel like medium grit sandpaper. If concrete remains smooth, repeat muriatic acid procedure. Test concrete porosity by sprinkling a few drops of water onto the surface in several areas. If the water is readily absorbed, you are ready to paint. If it beads or lays on the surface additional cleaning and muriatic acid solution is needed. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry for 24 hours. NOTE: Rinse muriatic acid solutions thoroughly. Muriatic asid solution allowed to dry on the masonry surface will prevent proper penetration and curing of the Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector. Surface must be thoroughly dry. Do not apply to damp surfaces. For exterior surfaces, do not apply if rain is expected within 48 hours. Wait for a dry, rain free period new concrete and freshly applied Portland cement based patching compounds must be cured for a minimum of 24 hours prior to application of Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector. Patch all holes and cracks with a suitable cement based patching compound. Be sure to smooth the patch evenly. Allow the patched area to dry thoroughly.

MIXING

No mixing required, the product is ready-to-use. Just shake the pail throughly before applying.

   

THINNING Due to variations in porosity, when applied over flagstone, slate, terrazo, dense smooth or light colored concrete, thin with clean, moderately warm water 10%—20% to minimize sheen variations as subsequent top coats are applied. Test on a small area to see final effect.

 

APPLICATION

Apply by brush, roller or squeegee. Spread evenly, do not allow puddles or heavy surface film to occur. Apply one coat. If after one coat, water droplets are readily absorbed into the surface (extremely porous surfaces), a second coat may be required. Allow 1 hour between coats. Sikagard®-219 Concrete Protector should not be used to build up surface film. As additional coats are applied, sheen build-up will occur and surface will become slippery when wet. On light-colored surfaces, some slight darkening may take place.

Note: Preliminary site test application is recommended (preferably on a small, prepared and inconspicous surface) to determine satisfactory appearance and surface slip resistance.

CLEAN UP

Clean all tools and application equipment with water immediately after use. Dried material can only be mechanically removed.
