Sika® Flexitape Heavy

POLYAMIDE (NYLON) MESH TAPE FOR LOCALIZED REINFORCEMENT OF Sikalastic® AND Sikagard® SYSTEMS

Polyamide (nylon) knitted reinforcement mesh for use with Sikalastic® waterproofing membranes and Sikagard® Duroplast wall coating systems. Available in two (2) widths, Sika® Flexitape Heavy is used over joints or cracks liable to movement and for bridging gaps between different substrate elements. Thanks to the material’s malleability, the reinforcement will follow surface contours and may easily be molded over different types of details.

Usage

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

SURFACE PREPARATION

   

The surface must be sound, of sufficient strength, clean, dry and free of dirt, oil, grease and other contamination. Depending on the material the substrate must be primed or mechanically-cleaned. For detailed information regarding substrate preparation and primer chart, refer to the Application Guide of the corresponding liquid-applied membrane or wall coating system.

   

PRIMING

     

There are two (2) types of application methods for applying partial reinforcement with Sika® Flexitape Heavy: 1) Application by direct laying over cracks, steps and joints, or 2 ) Application by partial disbondment over expansion joints and major movement cracks.

    

Sika® Flexitape Heavy is laid directly as a preliminary step prior to full over-coating of the substrate. A wet coat of membrane is laid at the specified application rate on either side of the defect. The tape is embedded, without stretching, into the wet coating by gentle brush pressure. Further coating is applied to obliterate the tape. Once dry or cured this is then overcoated as part of the overall membrane application. Expansion joints or major cracks upon which movement is known to be centered require a degree of disbondment to allow the creation of flexible bellows, thereby avoiding stress cracking. Apply a minimum 25 mm (1 in) width of release tape over the joint/crack. Apply a full layer of the coating and embed the Sika® Flexitape Heavy into it, centered on the joint/crack. Apply a further wet coating to obliterate the tape.

     

Note: Sika® Flexitape Heavy must exceed the masking by at least 38 mm (1 ½ in) either side to give adhesion. Consult with Sika Canada for specific recommendations.
