JOB SITE CONDITIONS:
Maintain environmental conditions and protect work during and after installation. Comply with trade and industry standards and manufacturer's printed recommendations. Turn off all forced ventilation and radiant heating systems and protect the work against drafts during installation and for at least 72 hours after completion. When necessary, use indirect auxiliary heaters to maintain an adequate temperature level in the working area (ambient and surface temperatures). Exhaust temporary heaters to the exterior to prevent damage to the work or personal injury from carbon monoxide emissions.
SUBSTRATE QUALITY
Substrate to have adequate strength, load-bearing capacity, be dimensionally stable and be permanently dry.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Surfaces should be clean and free of dust, oil, grease, paint, tar, wax, curing agent, primer, sealer and any deleterious substance or conditions that may prevent, reduce or inhibit adhesion or performances of SikaLevel®-115 Skim Coat. Before work commences, examine the areas to be covered and report any improper condition(s) in writing to the general contractor, architect or engineer. User shall not proceed with the work until surfaces and conditions comply with the requirements indicated in this document; applicable industry standards; federal, provincial and local regulations, as well as good trade practices. By beginning work, the applicator/user acknowledges that the conditions are acceptable.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
Surface treatments of any friable areas of the substrate must be mechanically removed and the surface be repaired with one of Sika's patching compounds or self- levelling material as required. Careful consideration should be given to the selection of the method of mechanical preparation of the surface and the timing of the application of primer and SikaLevel®-115 Skim Coat. Immediately following mechanical preparation on some excessively porous concrete substrate, outgassing will increase for a short period of time (approximately 48 hours) until an equilibrium in slab vapour pressure and the ambient environment is reached.
WARNING: Refer to the Regulations Made Under the Canada Labour Code for additional information regarding requirements for handling surface containing or suspected of containing lead-based paints or any flooring, substrate or substances that may contain asbestos.
Concrete (and cement mortar beds)
Concrete must be cured for a minimum of 28 days (14 days for cement mortar beds or only 5 hours when using SikaScreed®-40 screed mortar). On grade or below grade concrete slabs must be installed over an effective vapour barrier. On a clean substrate free of dust, place a single drop of potable water (quarter size) on the substrate using a pipette. The concrete should turn dark. If the drop is absorbed within 60 seconds, the substrate can be considered porous (or absorptive) and acceptable for using SikaLevel®-115 Skim Coat. Alternatively, if the water drop is absorbed very rapidly, it might be advisable to treat the surface with by applying diluted an application of SikaLevel®-03 Primer Plus one (1) part Primer Plus with three (3) parts of clean potable water. Otherwise, a bond test should be performed confirming good compatibility with the substrate. If an adequate bond cannot be achieved or in doubt, contact Sika Canada’s Technical Service.
SikaLevel®-115 Skim Coat can also be used to correct minor deficiencies (touch ups) over self-levelling underlayment.
Industry approved wood panel underlayments (interior residential and light commercial floor in dry areas only)
Suitable underlayments for soft floor coverings shall be the type and thickness recommended as being suitable to receive a certain manufacturer's flooring. The installation of the underlayment panel must be performed following the strict instructions with the said manufacturer's literature.
In any floor covering installation, the moisture content of the underlayment should not exceed the moisture content recommended by the wood and/or flooring manufacturer literature using the required moisture evaluation test. Sika recommends confirming the maximum moisture content immediately before using SikaLevel®-115 Skim Coat.
Note: Contact Sika Canada’s Technical Service for installation recommendations concerning substrates or conditions not listed.
