Elora Potter Foundry
- Projet location : Elora, Ontario
- Date of the project : Completed in 2021
- Duration of the project : 2 years
- Project size : Approximately 25,000 sq ft of Stone
To make room for a new condo building on the south side of the Grand River in Elora, the historical Potter Foundry (Kiddie Car Factory), originally constructed in 1873, will be completely deconstructed and moved 70 metres.
The building was in a state of ruins making it no longer safe for public use. Being designated Heritage, the Potter Foundry needed to go through a full heritage impact assessment which helped to answer the question – Should it be torn down, or relocated? The final decision was made to move the building as it is an important heritage resource.
Other points to be highlighted
The old building was deconstructed, and stones were sequenced so that the building could be reconstructed exactly the same in the new location.
Testimony of the MSR/Representative/Vice President on this project
Through deep rooted relationships with Tacoma Engineers and past success stories using KING products, there was a comfort in using the HLM product on this project. During the mock up stage it was decided that the ‘HLM-500 VC Series Natural’ mortar would be suitable in matching the physical appearance of the old mortar joint as well as performing as intended and needed with the old structure. The craftsmanship of Brian and his team shines bright with this masonry project and we can look forward to the building standing for another 150 years.
Why these products were chosen
In 1873 Lime based mortars were widely used. Because the Potter Foundry is designated Heritage, like products needed to be used on the reconstruction. HLM-500 is a lime based heritage mortar that would have been similar to the mortar used at the time. ‘VC’ stands for very coarse. We add larger aggregate to the premixed mortar to give it a more “old timey” look. The larger aggregate also helps compensate for shrinkage and leads to less cracking with the large mortar joints with the natural stone.
