As a manufacturer of specialty building products for the construction and industrial sectors, and a member of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), Sika Canada is committed to the process of transparency associated with sustainable construction, and in collaboration with the AGÉCO Group has developed a series of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that will provide architects, engineers, specifiers and contractors in LEED v4/4.1 projects with information on the ecological performance of its products.
What is an EPD?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a summary document that brings together, in a standardized format, information on a product's environmental performance. It is based on the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a scientific approach to measuring environmental footprints based on the internationally recognized ISO 14040 series of standards. It is based on a guideline that establishes standardized rules of analysis and comparison for each type of building material and product.
Sika EPD for masonry mortars and grouts
This Sika-commissioned Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) covers Sika masonry mortars and grouts manufactured at Sika Canada Inc. plants in Canada. It is a product-specific Type III Environmental Product Declaration developed in compliance with CAN/CSA-ISO 14025 and ISO 21930:2017 by Groupe AGÉCO and has been verified by the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute. It covers 15 masonry products (cementitious mortars and grouts) most commonly used in new construction.
It should be noted that this EPD includes the results of the LCA for the production stage only (cradle-to-gate).
Which contribution for which LEED credit?
As part of a project aiming at obtaining a LEED v4/4.1 certification, this EPD contributes 1.5 points towards satisfying LEED Materials and Resources (MR) Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization - Environmental Product Declarations.
